The Experience

Before You Go

Expect mixed road surfaces

Paved lanes alternate with rough shoulders and short gravel stretches—ride the motor and keep a steady speed on descents.

Hydrate and refill

Bring a refillable water bottle; guides supply refreshments but long stretches between villages can be hot and exposed.

Wear closed-toe shoes

Closed-toe footwear is required for safety on pedals and when scrambling off-bike near temple steps and river pools.

Bring a swimsuit and towel

A short freshwater dip in the Hayare-fed brook is part of the route—quick-dry clothing speeds comfort afterward.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Hayare rainforest freshwater bathing pools off the main lane
  • Quiet rice-terrace viewpoints near Yatagala temple for late-afternoon light

Wildlife

  • Toque macaques
  • Kingfishers and other water birds

Conservation Note

Follow your guide, stick to roads and marked paths, avoid single-use plastics, and respect temple sites to reduce cultural and ecological impact.

Yatagala Raja Maha Viharaya, passed on the route, is an ancient rock-cut Buddhist temple with archaeological layers stretching back over two millennia.
