The Experience

Before You Go

Hydration and snacking

Carry a 1–2 L hydration pack and small snacks—the trail is long and guided stops are limited.

Footwear and pedals

Wear stiff-soled mountain bike shoes and use pedals you’re comfortable with to manage loose gravel and short technical sections.

Sun and temperature swings

Bring sunscreen and a light windproof layer—sun is strong on exposed sections while higher passes can be cool.

Respect livestock and locals

Slow down when passing villages and herds; yield to donkeys and goats and follow your guide’s directions.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Quiet viewpoint above a Berber hamlet where local women sell fresh goat cheese and flatbread
  • Short side path through cedar stands where early morning light brings out resident raptors

Wildlife

  • Barbary macaque
  • Griffon vulture

Conservation Note

Stick to established trails to protect fragile soil and terraces, respect grazing plots, and carry out all trash—water is scarce in summer and local ecosystems are sensitive.

The High Atlas is home to Amazigh (Berber) communities whose terraced agriculture and mule tracks predate modern roads; villages along the route still use traditional irrigation and stonework.

What to Bring

Helmet (provided but bring your own if preferred)Essential

Protects against falls on rocky or loose sections; helmets are included but a personal well-fitting helmet is best.

Hydration pack (1–2 L)Essential

Keeps water and snacks accessible during long descents and limited stops.

Sturdy mountain bike shoes or flatsEssential

Provide grip and control on pedals and when you need to dab a foot on loose terrain.

Light windproof layer

Useful for chillier mornings and higher-altitude lifts where temperatures drop quickly.
