The Experience

Before You Go

Arrive early for gear fit

Plan to be 20–30 minutes early so staff can size your bike and fit your full‑face helmet and pads; ill‑fitting kit reduces confidence on descent.

Bring a small hydration pack

There’s limited time on the trail but you’ll sweat—carry 500–1000ml to sip between runs.

Wear flat‑soled or aggressive trail shoes

Downhill pedals and platform shoes help you feel secure on the bike and make weight shifts easier.

Expect variable weather

The Port Hills can be windy and cool; pack a lightweight waterproof and a warm mid‑layer.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Walk a short sidetrack at the top lookout for panoramic views of Christchurch and Lyttelton Harbour.
  • Stop at a lower‑slope clearing to observe remnant native kanuka and the subtle step terraces from ancient volcanic activity.

Wildlife

  • Tūī (songbird)
  • Kererū (native wood pigeon)

Conservation Note

Trail maintenance and staying on marked routes are critical—ride with care to limit erosion and support volunteer trail crews and local park initiatives.

The Port Hills are the eroded rim of an ancient volcanic system; the Christchurch Adventure Park opened in the 2010s and quickly became a center for lift‑served mountain biking in New Zealand.
