The Experience

Before You Go

Book a morning shuttle

Morning departures (09:00 or 10:30) give more daylight for stops and typically lighter winds for the return ride.

Bring a water bottle and snacks

There are cafes en route but stretches between services can be 30–60 minutes; hydration keeps kids and adults riding comfortably.

Use the test ride

Take advantage of the pre-ride bike setup and short test loop to dial in seat height and gears before heading out.

Stay on marked trails and respect farmland

Routes cross private land and river terraces — keep to the trail, close gates, and avoid short-cutting to protect pasture and streambanks.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Pembroke Patisserie in Albert Town — a popular bakery pit stop
  • Edgewater Hotel garden bar and the quiet Wanaka Tree viewpoint at sunrise

Wildlife

  • Black swans and waterfowl on the lakes
  • Fantail (pīwakawaka) and other small native birds in shrub areas

Conservation Note

Stick to trails to protect fragile river terraces and lake margins; avoid feeding wildlife and carry out any litter to support local freshwater health.

The trail corridor follows waterways important to Ngāi Tahu Māori and later became pastoral land and transport links during 19th-century European settlement and gold-era development.
