The Experience

Before You Go

Plan for the climb

The Ayagaures loop includes about 15 km of sustained uphill—pace yourself, use low gears and conserve energy for the descent.

Hydrate and shade

Carry at least 1–2 liters of water and sunscreen; shade is sparse on the climbs and temperatures can spike midday.

Bring or wear a helmet

Children get helmets provided but adults should bring a well‑fitting helmet for safety and comfort.

Cash for deposits and tapas

Have €50–€100 available for a refundable bike deposit and small bills for tapas stops in villages.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Bar La Cuevita — tapas inside an old aboriginal cave at Ayagaures
  • La Charca lagoon — a small birdwatching spot near the dunes with native lizards

Wildlife

  • Canary giant lizard (Gallotia stehlini)
  • migratory shorebirds at La Charca

Conservation Note

Maspalomas dunes are a protected natural area—stay on designated paths, avoid riding on the dunes and respect nesting birds and endemic plants.

The south coast mixes modern tourism with Guanche archaeological sites and cave churches; many small villages retain fishing and agricultural traditions.
