The Experience

Before You Go

Start early to beat heat and traffic

Begin at first light to avoid midday sun and city traffic near the park exits; cooler morning air makes climbs more manageable.

Bring a hydration system

Carry at least 2 liters in a hydration pack—water stops are limited and the route includes sustained climbs.

Be prepared for short technical sections

Expect rocky descents and rooty singletrack; lower tire pressures and scan ahead to choose lines.

Use the support van if necessary

If the climbs become too intense, the provided support van can pick riders up to rejoin later—don’t push beyond your limits.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Vista Chinesa viewpoint — sharp city and forest perspectives with fewer crowds than Corcovado
  • Mesa do Imperador (Emperor’s Table) — a flat granite outcrop with historical markers and wide views

Wildlife

  • Howler monkeys and marmosets
  • Toucans and a variety of Atlantic Forest birds

Conservation Note

As an urban national park, Tijuca relies on visitor stewardship—stay on trails, avoid feeding wildlife and minimize single-use plastics to protect habitat and water sources.

Tijuca National Park was largely replanted in the mid-1800s to restore watershed health after extensive deforestation during Brazil’s coffee boom, shaping its current mix of secondary forest and planted species.
