The Experience

Before You Go

Acclimatize before the trip

Spend 1–2 days in Cusco or at moderate elevation; the route reaches ~4,500 m where altitude sickness is common.

Wear grippy, broken-in footwear

Hike to Vinicunca includes loose scree and wet mud—sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes reduce slips and ankle rolls.

Layer for rapid temperature shifts

Days start cold, warm during the sun, and can become icy; pack an insulating midlayer and a windproof shell.

Bring cash and snacks

Remote lunch stops and local vendors may not accept cards—carry soles for tips, snacks, and bathroom fees.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Small highland lagoons near the Red Valley for quiet photos away from the viewpoint
  • Local pastoral camps where herders sometimes sell artisan alpaca wool goods

Wildlife

  • Vicuña
  • Andean condor

Conservation Note

High-altitude grasslands are fragile; stick to trails, avoid feeding wildlife, and pack out all trash to protect puna ecosystems.

The route runs through Andean puna lands shaped by millennia of pastoralism and Inca-era trails that linked high valleys to Cusco.

What to Bring

Sturdy hiking bootsEssential

Support and traction for steep, loose sections on the walk to Vinicunca.

Layered clothing (base, insulating, shell)Essential

Temperature swings and wind make layers essential throughout the year.

2–3 liters water and electrolytesEssential

High altitude and sun exposure increase dehydration risk during the ride and hike.

Sunscreen, sunglasses and a brimmed hat

Strong high-altitude UV can cause sunburn even on cool days.

Common Questions

What time is pickup and how long is the tour?

Pickup is generally before dawn (around 3:30 AM) and the full-day tour is about 11–12 hours including transfers, quad ride and the hike to Vinicunca.

Do I need prior ATV experience?

No advanced experience required; basic ATV control and comfort on rough tracks are recommended—guides give a safety briefing and helmets are provided.

How hard is the hike to the 7-Color Mountain?

The walk is short (~40 minutes) but steep and at high altitude; expect loose scree and 200–400 m of ascent, so pace conservatively.

Can people prone to altitude sickness join?

Those with a history of severe altitude sickness should avoid this trip; others should acclimatize in Cusco for 48 hours, hydrate, and consider acetazolamide after consulting a doctor.
