The Experience

Before You Go

Moss is fragile

Stay on designated tracks—moss regrows extremely slowly and off-trail damage can be permanent.

Wind can change quickly

Bring a lightweight windproof layer; gusts off the lava flats reduce stability on exposed sections.

Tire pressure matters

Run slightly lower tire pressure for traction on mossy and rooty singletrack, but not so low you risk pinch flats.

Battery strategy

Start with a full e‑bike battery and choose an economy mode if you plan to finish with climbs—guides can advise on settings.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Short singletrack through the forest west of the lake that riders call a ‘flow alley’
  • A lava outcrop near Kaldársel with low-angle exposure good for sunset views back to Reykjavik

Wildlife

  • Eider ducks and other waterfowl around Hvaleyrarvatn
  • Passerine birds in the birch patches; arctic fox sightings are possible but rare

Conservation Note

Riders are asked to stick to established trails—moss and lichens are fragile and can take decades to recover; pack out waste and minimize group impacts.

The area around Hvaleyrarvatn sits on relatively young volcanic ground formed by Holocene lava flows; local place names reflect centuries of small-scale farming and coastal livelihoods.

What to Bring

Full-face or trail helmetEssential

Protects against falls on technical singletrack and is provided by many operators but bring your own if you prefer.

Grippy trail shoesEssential

Improves pedaling control and confidence on off-camber, rocky sections.

Waterproof wind shellEssential

Lightweight protection against sudden coastal winds and drizzle.

Compact repair kit & pumpEssential

Carry puncture plugs, spare tube, and a small pump—trailside repairs are quicker than waiting for support.

Common Questions

Do I need mountain biking experience?

Typically a full-suspension eMTB, helmet, English-speaking guide, and Reykjavik pickup/drop-off as listed by the operator.

Are there weight or age limits for the e-bikes?

Most operators set age and weight limits for safety—confirm at booking; many require riders to be adults and specify maximum weights for eMTBs.

What if the weather is bad?

Tours run in variable Icelandic weather; operators may adjust route or cancel for safety—check cancellation policy and dress in layers.
