The Experience

Before You Go

Hydrate for two hours of riding

Carry a 1–2L hydration pack—water is provided but refilling mid-ride can be limited on singletrack.

Use flat or clipless-ready shoes

Guides provide pedals; bring your preferred cycling shoes for control on technical sections.

Choose dawn or late afternoon starts

Temperatures drop and wildlife activity increases early and late—avoid midday heat in summer.

Respect trail conditions

Avoid riding muddy trails after heavy rain to prevent erosion and protect future access.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • A short spur to the seasonal waterfall off the main trail (best after winter rains)
  • Quiet ridge views toward Black Mountain for late-day light and birdwatching

Wildlife

  • Coyote
  • Red-tailed hawk

Conservation Note

Stick to designated trails, avoid riding when trails are saturated, and pack out all trash to help limit erosion and protect riparian habitat.

The canyon lands were long used by the Kumeyaay people and later for Spanish-era ranching; the preserve protects riparian corridors and historic ranch remnants.
